However, the Roman idea was not a static concept and it changed dramatically over the course of two millennia. So the question is more complicated than simply when did Rome fall, but rather what was Rome and how did it succeed in creating such an enduring ecumene with multiple meanings? Write an essay in which you define “Rome” and offer an argument for WHEN and WHY it “fell.” Make sure you refer to specific DOCUMENTS and ideas to make your case. (Note: You must choose a date between 180-1453 and cannot simply argue that Rome still exists today.)
